It was called **Rax**, and at the height of their popularity, there were about 500 Rax stores across the US.\n\nToday there are five.\n\nI was on a road trip across the Ohio Valley with a friend recently when we decided to consult Google Maps to find somewhere to stop and get food. To our surprise, there happened to be an operating Rax restaurant along our route: the location on Third Street in Ironton, Ohio.\n\nIt was too rare an opportunity to pass up, right? We had to go there.\n\nUnfortunately, when we arrived at Rax, we learned the dining room was closed due to staffing issues. The drive-thru was open, but the driver's window on my friend's car doesn't roll down. What should we do?\n\nThat's when my friend decided to reverse through the drive-thru, so I could order from the passenger side.\n\nThe store manager was amused. \"I've never seen anyone drive backwards through the drive-thru before!\"\n\n\"My friend's driver side window doesn't open, so we had to improvise.\"\n\n\"I'm kind of surprised your friend's able to drive so well in reverse.\"\n\n\"They used to be a professional driver!\"\n\nIt wasn't too long before we got our food and went on our way--making sure to orient the car the conventional way before getting back on the road--but I like knowing that I helped make someone else's day just a little bit weirder.\n",

"description": "\r\nhi, my name is jenn schiffer. yes, you may know me from those few years i worked at the route 9 outback steakhouse not long after green day put out their first greatest hits compilation. i have to admit i *was* a nepotism baby, as my father was the kitchen manager. one day i was eating peanuts and he asked me a question mid-chew. as i answered, he mistook a peanut crumb for a tongue piercing and caused a scene; he was fuming because he apparently did not approve. i told him “get a goddamn grip and grow up!” he threw a carrot at me. that man didn’t even get a tombstone for my mother when she died! that’s why i have it tattooed on my arm. fast forward nearly 20 years later, i am a director of community at one of the few large tech companies that are not run by a gremlin or two co-gremlins. i also paint pixel art, build web apps, and make candles. every day is a winding road.",

"content": "this cartoon's turning into a high-class bout! and an immature one, too!\n \n---\n \nI was working last month on a couple new shorts in an attempt to revive my old youtube channel and see if it could help get me out of the financial situation I'm in, but then ad rates suddenly plummeted and kinda put the brakes on that whole idea for now, unfortunately. and now I'm left with a bunch of unfinished work for a couple shorts that are fun... but are also hard to justify working on when I'm having trouble paying rent.\n \nhonestly, I think it's strange for me to be suddenly placing such lofty expectations on derivative content. I always dreamed of eventually jumping over to making original productions full-time, but then the past number of years happened and kinda flipped priorities on their head, with most services and viewers prioritizing content featuring established properties or following behind an already-successful trail-blazer. perhaps I've been doing this fan animation song and dance for *way* longer than I think I wanted to be, and my head's just getting a little fuzzy and confuzzled and stuff.\n \nthat said, I would still love to maybe finish this someday and update my channel again, even if I don't earn anything from it. we'll see what the future holds"
